Acupuncture is a tried and tested system of traditional medicine that aims to restore and maintain good health by the insertion of fine needles (like a strand of hair) into acu-points of the ears / body. Acupuncture has now grown in popularity with some medical doctors and physiotherapists using it with Western medicine.
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) the body’s life energy called “Qi” travels around the body in pathways called meridians or channels. These channels are linked to specific energetic organ functions which support the way the body works. If “Qi” energy becomes weak, stagnant or excessive due to physical or emotional conditions, the body and its organs work less efficiently leading to disharmony within.
Used for thousands of years, more and more people are now enjoying this natural way to improve their health..

What does Acupunture feel like?
As Acupuncture is about re-balancing the body’s energy, you may well feel a sense of relaxation, calmness and well-being after treatment.
Some people can be put off experiencing the benefits of Acupuncture because of the use of needles, however the insertions are typically painless ranging from tingling, warmth, or dull ache sensations. I also offer “no needle” treatments using a range of Japanese Acupuncture tools which are especially good for treating babies, children and sometimes adults request them too. All needles are disposable and individually wrapped.
Scientific reasoning of how acupuncture works tend to fall into three popular types of explanations:
That the nerve fibres carry and transmit the acupuncture effect.
That the circulation of neurotransmitters and other hormones (particularly endorphins) in the blood and cerebrospinal fluid causes the effect.
That the meridians are electrically distinct, and that changes within them are responsible for triggering neural and humoral (bodily fluids) responses.
The specific imbalance and degree of disharmony is unique to each individual. The skill of a Traditional Acupuncturist is to be able to identify the precise nature of the underlying disharmony and to be able to choose the most effective treatment. Needling of these acu-points stimulates the body to “rebalance” itself, maintaining a state of equilibrium within our internal systems.

In the West, acupuncture is associated with pain relief, and addictions, although most are aware that in China it is used for anaesthesia. “Acupuncture wins backing in first national headache guideline: The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has launched its first clinical guideline on how to diagnose and manage headaches in adults and young people.
The NICE guideline suggests the use of acupuncture in treating tension-type headaches.
Previous published guidelines reveal that one person in 50 people experiences headaches as a result of overusing painkillers – which can reduce the medication’s effectiveness and cause further pain.
"Most patients notice a huge improvement in their condition (headache) after a course of acupuncture.”
